Opening

Mechelen opens its tower

Conservation for future generations
As you walk up along the more than 500 steps to the top of the tower, you discover the secrets of the belfry. At the top, your efforts are rewarded by a magnificent view. Until recently, the tower was only accessible to guided group tours. Now however, Mechelen plans to open up the tower to individual visitors. Through a number of adjustments aimed towards this new approach, and thanks to continuous maintenance, this Unesco World heritage site will be preserved for many future generations to come.

An experience with multimedia guide
The belfry tower reveals its secrets in an exceptional manner. The latest in audiovisual technology will guide you to the top. Whilst recovering your breath in the belfry chambres, you can pick up on the history of the belfry, Mechelen and the special relationship between tower and city.

Tailor made tours
Alone, with friends, family or the class… The multimedia guide offers everyone a tailor made tour. There is a camera integrated in the audiovisual guides. This allows for those not climbing the tower to see and hear the tower experience of other visitors live as they experience it.

Sky walk as a climax
The climax of this tour brings you to a lookout point which delivers breathtaking views on Mechelen, Antwerp's harbour and Brussels' Atomium. In the past this view had to be admired through the balcony of the tower, which blocked out the full panorama. After the reopening, the sky walk will make an unhampered view possible for you to enjoy.
